Super Tuning is a process that sands and polishes the friction points of a reel. I clean, sand and polish the main friction areas of a reel. This includes the spool shaft and ends, the pinion gear (internal and external), the shims and the friction ring. These parts are then polished to a mirror finish. Not only will you see an improvement in ease of casting but an improvement in casting distance. A typical reel will see a 15ft to 40 ft improvement in distance based on the reel model and bearings. If you’d like your reel to perform Better than it did new try getting one of your reels super tuned to see the difference. Most of my personal reels were purchased used on eBay. I did a comparison of two Pflueger Purist reels. One new from Bass pro Shops and one used from eBay. I super tuned the eBay reel and it actually out cast my new reel!
I had started to acquire baitcasters from eBay. I had a Pflueger Supreme that a client had bought me from Bass Pro Shops. I was impressed. But I thought $160 was high for a reel when I was used to paying $40 for my spinning reels from Gander Mountain. My wife turned me on to eBay and I started to get some more Purist for around $45. And then moving up to the Supreme which retailed for around $160 but I was getting them for $80. I started to see what I thought were better reels but couldn’t afford that price. I’m a crankbait angler and I wanted distance. I wanted to cast like the pro’s I was seeing on BassMasters and FLW. I started to research the mechanics of the baitcaster. What made some cast better then others. How could I get my reels to perform better. I started to hear about super tuning and tricking out. I started tearing a reel apart and super tuning it. I took my used Purist that I had just super tuned and also brought my new Purist from Bass Pro Shops. I was blown away. My used reel from eBay was out casting my new reel! Not only that but it was smoother on the cast and fewer backlashes. The light came on for me. A super tuned reel was far superior to even a new reel. Here’s why.
