Reel Maintenance & Care

Reel maintenance is probably one of the easiest and most overlooked way to keep your reel in prime shape. One of the biggest problem I see with the reels I service is some form of corrosion or rust. Our reels are meant to be used on the water…..but not in the water. Believe it or not your reel will rust. Most of the reels out there do not have corrosion resistant bearings. And there are many parts in your reel that will start to rust with a little moisture on them. A reel  will get moisture inside from the humidity and your line. The problem is once moisture is in a reel it doesn’t easily evaporate.  Here’s a few simple steps to keep your reel in shape.  Before putting your reels away take 30 seconds and take your side plate off  and take a soft cloth and wipe the inside of your side cover, regardless of whether you have centrifugal or magnetic brakes. Do this every trip. This get’s any moisture, pollen or dust that may have gotten in your reel. Once a month include a wipe down of the spool shaft and ends. If you get caught in a down poor Definitely open your reels up spray them with some compressed air even hit them lightly with a blow dryer. You do not want that water to sit in your reels. I’m offering different reel service packages because you don’t always need a full service. A tune up or bearing flush are two packages I offer that you can do in between your yearly cleanings.
Here are some Do’s and Don’ts with your reels.

Do’s

  • Wipe your reel down with a soft cloth after a trip.
  • Try to keep your reels covered when transporting them and in the rain.
  • After a trip in the rain open your reels and spray them out with some compressed air or let them dry out open.

Don’ts

  • Don’t dunk your reel in the water
  • Don’t add oil to your reel every time you hit the water.
  • Don’t spray your reel with wd-40 (it actually break’s down oil and grease)
